C. Vernon Howard (Retired Member)

Vern grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, found his way to South Dakota State College, and finally landed as a young student in Madison. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, Vern attended the University of Michigan Law School, and joined the Stroud firm immediately after graduation.  He remained with our firm throughout his career.

During Vern’s years of practice, he earned the reputation as a top-notch estate planner.  Vern was routinely selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the field of trusts and estates and was repeatedly named as one of Madison’s best estate planning attorneys by Madison Magazine.  Vern passed his knowledge on to a new generation of estate planners by teaching at the UW Law School.

Vern is past president of the Dane County Bar Association and past chairman of the State Bar Taxation Section. Vern’s significant contributions to the Dane County legal community are documented in the Dane County Bar Association’s publication Lawyers Who Shaped Dane County: A History of The Practice of Law in the Madison Area.
